Diana’s Similarity to the Greek Goddess Artemis

In ancient Greece, a group of goddesses were called the Muses. They were the goddesses of a wide range of arts and sciences. One very important goddess was the Greek goddess of the hunt, hunting, and the moon, Artemis. There are many similarities between the Greek Artemis and Diana. Diana is a goddess of the hunt, the moon, and all forms of the creative arts. One of the most important similarities is that Diana is a hunter of the same type as Artemis.

Diana, the goddess of wild animals and goddess of the hunt in Roman religion, is identified with the Greek goddess Artemis. Her name is related to the Latin words dium (“sky”) and dius (“sunlight”). Like her Greek counterpart, she was also the goddess of livestock. As the goddess of fertility, she was invoked by women to aid in pregnancy and childbirth. Diana may have originally been the goddess of the forest, but from early times she was identified with Artemis. Although there was probably no original connection between Diana and the moon, she later adopted the identity of Artemis with both Selene (Luna) and Hecate, the Chthonic (infernal) god. Therefore, the characterization triformis is sometimes used in Latin literature.
